So You Want To Be A DJ.
Chapter 6: Voice Technique & Persona
There are many things to consider when making your
announcements over the PA system. The most
important thing to remember is to never say “Um..."
or “Uh..." on the microphone. If you need to pause
and think about what you are going to say next,
simply pause
silently
.
If you pay attention to the radio or television, you will
almost
never
hear the word “Um". It is more
appropriate and more professional to either be silent
for a moment, or for a longer pause, perhaps say
something like
well, let me think about that for a
minute
, or
hm, that's interesting
, while you collect
your thoughts.
Always keep your announcements brief. You may
have a lot of different things you want or need to say,
but it does not all need to be said at each break. You
don't want to sound repetitive. Instead, announce one
or two things at each break or transition. It's a good
idea to keep a Notepad or TextEdit window on your
computer screen, or even a written “cheat sheet"
handy so that you remember the specific things to
announce.
