So You Want To Be A DJ.
Even at bars sometimes the crowd just isn't there,
especially if you do a regular weekly gig and
something else is going on in town. I've been known
to play solitaire on the computer, or chat on Facebook
if WiFi access is available.
No matter what, however, you have to be there at your
post at least most of the time so that people know that
you are in fact available for requests; you can't just
“phone it in", set up a playlist and walk away. You are
still being paid to entertain.
If you find yourself with a very dull crowd during part
of a gig, or a crowd that is simply uninterested, this
would be a good time to play “B-Sides", or less
popular music. Save your good dance and rock music
for when a better and more interested crowd shows
up. It is never fun to tell a new group “sorry, I already
played that song before you guys showed up".
