So You Want To Be A DJ.
Make sure to use a
tripod
-style speaker stand. My rule
of thumb is to adjust the tripod height to about chin
level, then place the speaker on the secured stand.
This places the
tweeters
above
ear-level
, so that
nobody has sound directly in their ears, even if they
are standing up. This avoids so-called
hot spots
, or
places within the venue where the sound is too loud.
It's always best to project the sound
above
the
listeners, as it will distribute more evenly around the
room.
In some cases, especially in smaller venues, it may
make more sense to place one speaker up high on a
tripod stand, a few feet away, and the other on the
floor directly in front of the DJ table facing upward
toward the singer area. This is similar to the way
concerts have
monitor
speakers on the stage floor. By
placing the speaker on the floor facing upwards
behind
the microphone, the singer can hear
themselves while avoiding feedback. Since the
speaker is in front of
the DJ facing away, you also
avoid any feedback from the DJ microphone.
In all, the speaker placement will depend on the
venue, and some trial-and-error experimentation will
be required. After a few gigs, you will quickly realize
what works and what doesn't, and you'll be able to
look around the room and, within a few minutes,
decide the ideal speaker placement for that particular
room just by looking around.
