tmello - are you having this problem specifically on the 7.8.1 version? You say it works on the older version, but not the latest?

I don't know if uninstalling and doing a fresh install will fix it, but it's certainly worth a try... if that doesn't help, let me know, or shoot an email to Support@VDJ.Net and I'll look further into the problem.

Your license has not changed. In your license email the first line reads:

*** PLEASE PRINT OR SAVE THIS EMAIL ***

Doing so would prevent this type of situation, especially when you know you plan to format your computer frequently.

I have sent you a private email as well with your key.

I have removed your other posts with swear words, please refrain from using swears on my discussion boards, I like to keep things relatively PG friendly...

I suppose one of the reasons I wanted to post an article was to help show people that VDJ is not some big corporation, rather it is still a project run by the person who first thought of the idea 20 years ago. This is beneficial for many reasons, one being that just yesterday, a certain customer pointed out a bug that I had forgotten to fix (the MONO button was broken).

A couple hours later, I published 7.8.1, which addressed this issue :)  Try that with any of the bigger companies. Even if the product originated as a result of one person's idea, often times it is bought up by a corporation who has no such vested interest other than money. I am vested in my customers, and in the product itself.

Yes, our conversation about this made me realize it's a story that should be shared. I chose the "Brief History" title as an homage to Stephen Hawking, with his ground-breaking book "A Brief History of Time" ;)  Not that VDJ is anywhere as groundbreaking as discovering black holes or furthering Einstein's research...

The Studio/Mixer layout will always remain. I have toyed with changing it in the past, and it just wasn't VDJ -- I didn't recognize it. Some hate it, others love it, and those who love it will continue to be loyal (I seem to have a pretty good long-term loyalty percentage among long-time customers). No need to change it and look "just like the others".

From a distance, I can't tell the difference between Sorato, VirtualDJ, Virtual Turntables, and many other DJ programs (two turntables, two player "decks", etc)...but you can spot Virtual DJ Studio from across the room :)

As it comes close to 20 years of Virtual DJ Studio, I figured it was time to share a brief history of how it all came to be. Thus my article:

Virtual DJ Studio: A Brief History

Check it out if you're curious how it all came to be.

I'm taking a short break while I work on some other, non-VDJ projects, but work will commence soon and I'll post any updates as they come along. For the moment, 7.8.0 has been rock-solid and is proving to be a good, long-lasting version. If you haven't upgraded already, be sure to do so now!

Q & A / Re: VDJ on an IPad
« on: June 25, 2017, 06:06:26 AM »
I'm not personally familiar with "Parallels" (or even iPads in general), but in my experience with "virtual" machines, they are almost always very slow and resource hungry. This is because they act as an emulator. This is fine when (for example) you want to emulate a C64 or Nintendo on a PC, but emulating a PC architecture on an iPad ... well, I'd have to try it and see (hey, I think I have an excuse to buy an iPad now ;) )

The difference with Crossover for Mac/Linux is that it is not an emulator, rather it implements the Win32 API almost directly on those platforms. With Emulators (like VirtualPC which I believe Microsoft bought out) you're essentially booting the target OS on a virtual machine; Crossover instead replicates the API directly, so it's more integrated into the actual Mac/Linux OS.

All of that said, an iPad is a touch-centric device (I believe that's a word) and though VDJ does well with touch-screens, it might not be the best in some situations (drag and drop, etc)... the audio on an iPad should be sufficient, and then you just have the issue of connecting a storage device (for your music) but that's another thing that has become much easier in recent years (USB To Go adapters)...

Funny I'm bashing the "Virtual" emulators, when in fact I named VDJ "Virtual DJ Studio" because in its own way it is just that - a Virtual "studio" for DJs... emulated on a PC. (Note it is not a "Virtual DJ" - that's another program. I can't write a program to do all of the things a DJ does (nor do I think the competition can). I can however write a program that does what the Studio does FOR a DJ. Hence the mixer-board layout).

But it's not emulating one computer architecture on another, it's emulating the real world on a PC, which tends to be more efficient as that's kinda what computers are supposed to do - emulate the real world, making real world tasks easier :)

Sorry but an iPad can only run software written specifically for iOS and distributed via Apple's store... VDJ is strictly a Windows PC app, though it can be run on Mac OS or Linux under specific circumstances.

You *can* run the Web App on any device (iPad included) but that's for customer requests. Soon it will allow the DJ to have more control over the program -- but even then, the actual DJ software would be running on a Windows PC...

Announcements / Virtual DJ Studio 7.7.8 Released
« on: June 07, 2017, 10:19:04 AM »
Virtual DJ Studio version 7.7.8 has just been released. Taking the new indexer a bit further, this new version is faster than ever, and does not require a re-index if upgrading from the 7.7.7 version.

Lots of little bug fixes, and a major drop in memory usage if you have a lot of files indexed, this is a strongly recommended -- and FREE -- update for all 7.x users!

Notice I had to choose a public domain song (Mary Had a Little Lamb) for the Karaoke part... I didn't have Camptown Races  ;D

For the hosted app, I've created a video that shows you (the DJ/KJ) exactly why you NEED to have this:

Give it a look and you'll definitely consider using the MyDjSongBook.com hosted app!

This new version takes Music indexing to a whole new level! Much faster initial index, while gathering more information about your files in the background. This means you can start using your new index within a minute or two -- far faster than any previous version!

It's still a free upgrade for all licensed 7.x users - so hit the Download Page Today!

*NOTE* You will have to reindex your files -- however it will take FAR less time than ever before.

New Feature: Karaoke Follow-Along
With the MyDjSongBook.com app, you can now allow your customers to follow along with the song lyrics on their phone or other device! This ground-breaking feature is EXCLUSIVE to Virtual DJ Studio, and you won't find anything like it anywhere else.

Announcements / New Version Monday - BETA NOW if Interested
« on: May 20, 2017, 12:06:22 PM »
I don't know if anybody visits here anymore - my forums have gotten lonely guys!!!

If anyone's interested, I've been working VERY HARD on a new version of VDJ: 7.7.7. Included is an all-new database with super-fast two-stage indexing (so you can be using the program in just a couple minutes after starting an index!), and a TON of bug fixes and small new features.

Here is the release candidate 7.7.7 for Monday Morning:

https://www.vdj.net/bEtA/VDJSetup.exe

Barring any new bugs, this is what will be released on Monday. I just want two more nights of testing before I sign off, then Monday it goes out :)

So, come on back and at least say "hi" now and then... :)

Announcements / Version 7.7.6 Released Today -- RECOMMENDED UDPATE
« on: April 21, 2017, 10:09:02 AM »
This one fixes a long-standing problem that I wasn't aware of. Some customers were complaining that the indexing wasn't working, or the program crashed before finishing, and I have pinpointed the problem.

VDJ creates temporary files when it encounters certain ZIP files - but it wasn't properly DELETING the temp files after it was done. This has now been fixed, and VDJ cleans up after itself.

This version also has some improvements regarding the MyDjSongBook.com request app.

This is a STRONGLY recommended update, especially if you've had issues with indexing in the past or if you use the MyDjSongBook app.

I had the wrong URL on there for the video... oops! Plus it's been updated somewhat.

I just released (yesterday) a 7.7.1 update that fixes a few minor issues with the Karaoke screen, and with the handling of connection errors when using the server app.

As for the Karaoke screen, the "default" is now the 3 pictures and with no QR code by default (you can still turn that back on). I figured most people still don't know what it is or how to use it -- I still haven't seen a phone with a factory-installed QR reader... so I'm not going to push it and waste valuable screen space on something that just looks kinda cool... and many if not most of my customers use the default screen layout...

If anyone's interested, hit MyDjSb.com/dj for the description for DJs to check out what all you can do with it.

For fun I posted a YouTube promo video. Once VDJ 8.0 is released with video playback support, I'll include a version of this but without the header & footer text (since VDJ will add that, and it will reflect your own personal URL).

The idea is that you could play this now and then to get your customers' attention, letting them know that they can go to the app without anything to download or install, just typing an address.
