So You Want To Be A DJ.
Chapter 2: Tools of the Trade
There is an investment required to get started as a
successful DJ. You will need, at minimum, the most
basic set of equipment: a
mixer
, at least one
microphone
, and a
PA
system, or
Public Address
system.
Your PA system consists of at least two speakers, and
possibly an
amplifier
, depending on whether you use
powered
or
passive
speakers, covered in the next
chapter. Of course you will also need a music source,
ideally a laptop computer, to complete the package.
Let's start with the mixer. A
mixer
is simply a device
that takes multiple input sources – microphones,
laptop or CD player, etc – and mixes the sounds
together to be heard over the PA system. You can
control the level of each input separately, to achieve
the best
mix
. You should become familiar with your
mixer board, so that you know what levels are
appropriate for your particular equipment, and can
make quick adjustments when necessary. Be sure to
read through the manual that comes with your mixer
to ensure that you know its functions inside and out.
There are many choices of mixer boards available.
Many will be
over-kill
– in other words, for a small DJ
gig, you don't need 16 channels on a large mixing
