So You Want To Be A DJ.
When the DJ isn't too busy, ask questions. How did
they get started. What do they like about being a DJ.
It's also a good idea to exchange business cards with
other DJs. It's okay to tell them that you are trying to
get started in the business. Other DJs can refer gigs to
you in the event that they are ill, double-booked, or
for whatever reason they can't make a certain event.
Conversely, it's a good idea to have other DJs that
you
can recommend if you can't make a certain date. The
customer will appreciate the fact that even though you
couldn't do it personally, you tried to help them find
someone who could. They may be more likely to call
you first the next time they have an event.
Keep in mind, you might meet a DJ that is unfriendly,
or sees you as competition. He or she may not even
wish to exchange business cards. These arrogant types
should simply be avoided – you wouldn't want to refer
someone like that to your customers anyway. You can
use them as an example of how
not
to behave.
