So You Want To Be A DJ.
Chapter 5: Computer Hardware & Software
There are a lot of things to consider when choosing an
appropriate laptop computer for DJ work. One of the
main concerns is cooling. It is best to choose a
computer that will handle long hours, sometimes in
hot and humid conditions, without shutting down or
otherwise failing to function.
Some inexpensive laptop machines simply cannot
handle running for hours at a time, especially outdoors
or in other high-temperature environments. They often
lack the proper cooling mechanisms to keep the
machine running properly.
One thing to look for is the cooling fan. Most laptops
have a fan at the bottom, pulling air in, and venting
out through a slot in the back or side of the machine.
In this case, it is a good idea to prop the computer up
in the back to allow air-flow to circulate. You can
usually use the laptop's own power supply to prop the
machine up, or even a CD case.
Another good idea is to purchase a cooling pad – a
base that you place underneath the computer,
containing fans that are usually powered by a USB
port on the computer itself. This helps machines with
insufficient internal cooling to stay cool and continue
to run properly.
