So You Want To Be A DJ.
Chapter 3: Speakers
Now that you have your input sources (microphones,
music source) mixed down, you need to project the
final sound to your audience. There are many different
options that can accomplish this.
Powered vs Passive
First, let's get into
powered
vs
passive
speakers. A
powered
or
active
speaker has a built-in amplifier,
where a
passive
speaker requires a separate amplifier.
Let's start with the advantages of powered speakers:
A
powered
speaker has a built-in amplifier. One
advantage is that it's difficult to blow the
speaker – the amplifier that is built-in is
perfectly matched for the speaker by the
manufacturer. In other words, the amplifier will
only put out as many Watts as the speaker can
handle.
Another advantage is that the signal wires are
less expensive, as they are only carrying a
signal
, rather than a full-powered
driving
current
to drive the speaker. It's easy to chain
additional extensions if you need the speaker
further away at a particular venue.
