The
disadvantages
of powered speakers are:
•
A powered speaker requires not only an input
signal cable from the mixer, but also an AC
outlet. This may, in some cases, mean running
additional extension cords to the speaker.
•
Powered speakers usually have a “level control"
that must be configured before the gig, so that
each speaker is outputting the same volume for
the input (from the mixer).
A
passive
speaker is simply a speaker
without
a built-
in amplifier. In this situation, you need an external
amplifier connected to the mixer, and the speaker only
needs one cable from the amplifier to the speaker. The
advantages are:
•
A
passive
speaker does not need to be near an
electrical outlet.
•
Since there is no built-in amplifier, a passive
speaker tends to weight less.
The disadvantages are:
•
You need an external amplifier to drive the
speaker. This is one extra piece of equipment to
lug around, one more item to connect between
the mixer and the speakers, and one more
electrical outlet at the DJ station used up.
•
Since you are using an external amplifier, you
have to make sure the speakers are designed to
