So You Want To Be A DJ.
is to look for the
RMS Watt
rating. This rating will
almost always be lower than the so-called
peak
wattage
or
max watts
. The RMS rating is the only one
that can be relied upon.
Secondly, every speaker has a different
efficiency
. In
other words, a well made 100 watt speaker may
actually be louder than a cheaper 300 watt speaker.
Again, your ears are the ultimate judge, for both
loudness and sound quality. If they don't sound good
to your ears in the store, you will likely be unhappy
with them in the field.
Finally, the wattage needed will depend on the size of
gig you plan to perform. It's always a good idea to go
big – start with a system that has more than enough
power for what you plan to do. It's better to have some
extra headroom than to find yourself wishing you
could go louder because you saved a few bucks.
Don't let the sales people talk you into a different
model if it doesn't sound good to you. Remember –
this is a large investment you are making, and you
might be stuck with your choice for a number of
years. Make sure you choose speakers you will be
happy with for the next five years or more.
