So You Want To Be A DJ.
If you experience abnormal noise in your signal, first
try
unplugging
your laptop power supply. If the noise
suddenly goes away, then you know that a ground
loop is in fact the problem. After removing the
laptop's power supply from the situation, you know
that is the source of the noise. Of course, you most
likely can't DJ an entire gig using the battery.
There is a simple fix for this. When you plug your
laptop's AC adaptor into the electrical outlet or surge
protector, use a 2- to 3- prong adaptor, much like what
you would use if you only had a 2-prong un-grounded
outlet. This simply eliminates the ground connection
on the power supply, so the audio now has only one
single path to ground via the audio cables to the mixer
board. It is as though you had the power supply
disconnected.
You might be tempted to simply
remove
the third
(ground) prong from the power cord, but this is
not
recommended. First of all, it's not safe. Second, it is
against most electrical codes to do so. A simple
ground adaptor for a couple of dollars will do the
same thing without modifying your power supply or
voiding your computer's warranty. A $3 fix can save
you a thousand dollars or more.
