So You Want To Be A DJ.
Misinterpretations
Care should be taken in how you say your name out
loud. I personally learned this the hard way. I make a
point to say:
Welcome ladies and gentlemen, this is
DJ J-Man
I made the mistake once of phrasing it this way:
Welcome ladies and gentlemen, this is
the J-Man
...
If you say that out loud, in a crowd of noisy people,
people might hear it incorrectly... I had a guest come
up and ask me if my name was “the gay man". From
that point on, I made sure to say “
DJ J-Man"
instead
of simply “
the J-Man"
!
Your Persona
Now that you have decided on a name, some DJs
adopt a
persona
. You might have a certain look or
attitude. You might have a character you have
developed – a voice, accent, costume, hat, etc.
I recommend that your persona simply be
you.
Unless
you are a great actor and can pull off a gimmicky
costume or voice, you should simply be yourself and
dress professionally. Of course you can dress for the
occasion – costume at a halloween party, a Santa hat
