So You Want To Be A DJ.
and to hold the mic close enough to avoid further
feedback... but you sometimes need to do this if the
singer is really making his or herself sound bad.
Sometimes a little instruction on how to properly use
a microphone is worth the momentary awkwardness.
It is best
not
to try and instruct the entire crowd about
microphone handling, or to announce any other rules
out loud on the PA. First, many of your guests are
probably engaged in conversation and will not hear
what you have to say. Second, it makes you look like
you are setting rules, and guests don't often appreciate
that. They are here to have fun, not listen to a list of
rules. Some guests may even intentionally violate
those rules as an act of defiance or to get attention.
Instead, if a particular guest is doing something you
do not like, take them aside at an appropriate time and
politely let them know what they are doing
incorrectly.
If you have wired microphones, one thing that can
irritate a DJ more than anything else is the
swinging
mic
. This is where the guest decides to swing the
microphone by the cord. Of course these cords are
somewhat expensive, and the disregard for your
property can be very irritating. It can potentially
disconnect and fly into the crowd, or it can simply
wear out the electrical connections within the jacks so
that, at a later date, your microphone starts cutting out.
